I'm currently setting up to perform a side-by-side upgrade of various SQL 2008 R2, SQL 2012 databases to SQL 2014. My preferred method of upgrading 2008R2 and 2012 databases on various nodes/instances to my SQL 2014 cluster would be to detach on the source and attach on the target 2014. My second method would be to backup on the source and restore on the target 2014 instance.
My question is the following:
If I perform and detach at source DB and attach on destination 2014 cluster instance does SQL Server upgrade the database being moved automatically during the attach step?
Second, if I choose to perform a backup on a source DB and restore to my target 2014 cluster does SQL Server upgrade the database being moved automatically during the restore step?
