SQL Server Licensing 2014

$

Hello,

I have some questions about SQL Server Licensing. Please consider me an amateur in this area.

Suppose we have:

- Multiple VMs running SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition and all these VMs are hosted on a ESXI host in Data Center 1.
- We have licensed all the cores of the ESXI host for use by the above SQL Servers and have purchased SA.

Scenario 1:

Organization wants to migrate all SQL Server VMs to a new ESXI Host in a new Data Center and shut down current Data Center.

Question: Does above licensing permit this even if new ESXI host does not have licensed cores?

Scenario 2:

Organization wants to migrate a single SQL Server VM to the new ESXI Host in a new Data Center.

Question: Does above licensing permit this even if new ESXI host does not have licensed cores?

In either case does DBA have to take any action once migration of VMs is complete?

Thanks

I am not sure if I am in the right space but hope someone can provide some guidance.

We have a prospect that has been using a 20+ year UNIX-based, proprietary retail management system. They want to move to D365 (Business Central) with a POS module. '

Does anyone have any suggestions about doing data extraction/migration? I'd appreciate any AND all thoughts.

Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server Login timeout expired after migrating to Windows Server 2019 and SQL Server 2016 Standard

Hi all,

We are experiencing db connection issues after migrating from Windows Server 2012R2/SQL Server 2016 Enterprise to Windows Server 2019/SQL Server 2016 Standard.

The message we see in the logs when it happens contains the following: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server]Login timeout expired’

It seems that the message appears when the db is used a lot and there are many connections to it. The errors occur with two out of three applications:

Windows : .NET (SQLConnection) application

Linux : PHP7.2/Linux driver

It does not happen under Windows with SQLOLEDB.

The issue does not occur consistently which makes it more difficult to reproduce and debug.

We have checked/tried the following to no avail:

- SQL user check
- Temporarily disabling Windows Firewall
- Temporarily disabled Windows Defender
- Verified MTU settings
- Verified DNS
- Checked all logs

Other services are fine.

This is our setup:

- PowerEdge R730
- Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Standard
- 2x Intel Gigabit 4P I350-t rNDC (Driver version 12.15.22.6)
- NIC-Teaming on two ports (different networkcards no LACL)
- Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Standard

Basically the problem started since the upgrade to Windows Server 2019 en downgrade from SQL Server 2016 Enterprise to Standard.

Any help which would lead us into the right direction is greatly appreciated!!

Kind regards,

Mervin Graves

Migration from single 2012 to HA/AG 2017 CU16 - Architecture and Design

Hey Forum

I am a new dba, that have been tasked to migrate 8 SQL servers into 3 SQL 2017 CU16 HA/AG so that our SQL Servers are more online and time consuming Windows Updates can be done in production time.

I have installed the 3 HA/AG groups, and I am testing migration which I have restored 99% of the Databases on one of my HA/AG group. They are running in Synchronous mode, with Automatic failover.

I then tried to restore a db, but according to google I have to delete the db from the AG and both servers, set it into a singlemode and now I can restore the DB. (My thoughts were, that a DB would apply the changes from the DB I am trying to restore from)

Is there a way to have specific databases from the one SQL 2012 (Version 11.0.7001.0) Source Server up to date on the new AG/HA without deleting my current work?

The old source server is a single SQL Server in the broadest sense.

My catch is that the Source SQL Server has to be running for another 8 weeks, and I am not allowed to reboot, change/add any IP adresses.

migration from 2008 to 2017

Hi

We migrated from 2008 to 2017  with compatibility level 140 and we faced issues CLR restriction for assembly loading.

then we created assembly with CERTIFICATION.

My questions

1)  if we set compatibility level 100 then I did not get any error all datas restored in target 2017 successfully.

So  what are features in 2017 that I will be missing if compatibility level 100

2)  After migrating if I change to 2017 compatibility to 140 did I miss anything.

Please suggest

Dear Microsoft,

We have a server window 2008 installed SQLserver 2008. We would like to migrate the data to new built server window 2016 with SQL Server 2016, Is that possible migrate the data directly?( I mean backup the database in SQLserver 2008 and restore in SQLserver 2016). No need to use SQL Server 2012, SQL Server 2014 Version. Am I correct?

Hope can get your reply very soon.
