Multi Lingual character issue with MS SQL server 2008 R2

Hi,

This is real time scenario issue, a customer has Application Database of MS SQL Server 2008 R2 and it stores in Multi lingual data in SQL Server. I heard that SQL Server 2008 R2 doesn't support Multi Lingual data but somehow the application is working smooth with multi lingual database. Now they want to do Application upgrade which involves Data Migration and we are doing the Data Migration using ETL tool. But whenever we try to import the multi lingual data is shown in junk characters, its confirm that ETL doesn't change the Character type of multi lingual data still the characters are junk. The same thing we tried with SSIS we are able to do it and data look fine as required.

Can any help me to understand or find resolution how should move this data using ETL?

Thanks in advance!

Down time to switch 'Compatibility level' on large database?

$

Hi

We have a reasonably large (several TB) database that was recently migrated from 2008 to a new box running 2014.  Before giving it back to the users we forgot to change the compatibility level of the DB to bring it up to date with it's new environment.

We want to do some testing with backup compression so want to change the compatibility level, but we are unsure whether making the change on such a large database would cause slowness or downtime for our users.

Does the process of changing the compatibility level simply allow options that are not available in the older version or does it make structural changes to the database that would cause the users to notice slowness or downtime?

Upgrade replicated 2008R2 server from 32 to 64 bit

$

We currently have a hub and spoke SQL topology where we have a single publisher in our corporate office, and 2 remote sites with SQL servers using merge replication on specific tables in the database. Due to hardware limitations at time of build, the VM in one remote site was set up as 32 bit. We are acquiring 64 bit hardware, and would like to upgrade it to 64 bit. I've read up on what I could find for doing this "upgrade" by replacing the server with a 64 bit machine of the same name. This was the draft steps I cam up with. Can anyone confirm or critique this process?

  1. Install SQL 2008 R2 on new x64 server with new system name. Patch to same level as source server.
  2. Stop replication on publisher
  3. Make sure all users are off server
  4. Backup all system and user databases
  5. Export users, logins, configuration settings, replication settings, linked servers, stored procedures, SSIS packages, proxy accounts, and anything manually created in system DBs.
  6. Back up all user databases
  7. Shut down source sql server and decommission.
  8. Rename destination server to same system name and re-join to domain.
  9. Restore system databases
10.  Attach user databases

11.  Import any missing users, logins, linked servers, SPs, packages, proxies

12.  Enable replication on publisher.

I am unsure of the replication piece. Would it be better to remove the subscriber completely and reinitialize replication, or is restoring master databases a reliable route to take? I haven't found much documentation on this specific scenario, so I'm reaching out for some help. Thanks.

Creating an identity primary key from Oracle DB that has a sequence primary key.

Is there a way in SS Migration Assistant to create an identity primary key from an Oracle database that has a sequence for the primary key?   I want to create the identity when I convert the schema.  But I can't figure out how to make it automatically convert the key id to an identity.

Thanks

MySQL datetime(precision) not mapped. Unable to map it. M2SS0044

I'm using SQL Server Migration Assistant for MySql v6.0.0 to convert some tables and migrate the data.

In the MySQL database there are a number of types that are datetime(5) which gives the following error when trying to convert the schema:

M2SS0044: Type 'datetime(5)' was not converted because there is no mapping for it. Add a mapping and then convert again.

I tried to create a mapping but there is no datetime(precision) as SourceType to select. Is it possible to create one somehow?

Thanks!

SQL Server - Multiple Instances

We currently have several instances of SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard running on our site, but as we look to improve our systems, we wish to install some 'redundancy' and 'backup' instances of SQL Server 2008R2 Express.

Without modifying our current licenses, is this acceptable? The end result would be us outputting data from the main Standard edition data server to one or several Express edition data servers.

Should there be a fault, we'd then go from one or several Express data servers to the Standard data server.

Thanks in advance!

SQL server migrate to an Active Directory Domain

I have a SQL 2008 running on a server that is not part of an Active Directory Domain. I would like to add the server to Active Directory. How will this impact SQL in terms of the SQL users, Windows Authentication, and permissions? Do you have any suggestions on performing this migration?

Move instance from cluster to stand alone

I have a SQL 2008 R2 2 node cluster.  For DR testing, I need to restore an instance on a new server (completely isolated).  The existing instance runs on what I would call an alias.  The actual cluster host name is SQLPROD (cluster nodes are SQL01 and SQL02).  The instance runs on server SQLPROD-APPLE.  The instance is called APPLE.  In production, I use SQL Management Studio and I connect to SQLPROD-APPLE\APPLE.

I've setup a new VM to run SQL.  Not a cluster.  Host name is SQLREC.  The new Vm has all the IP addresses that were on the cluster and the DNS for all the aliases are correct.  I've installed instance APPLE.  I created an alias called SQLPROD-APPLE.  When I try to open SQL Management Studio and connect, I can't connect to SQLPROD-APPLE\APPLE.  I can connect to localhost\APPLE, SQLREC\APPLE, 192.168.168.50\APPLE.

When I attempt to connect to the alias I get error 18452.  Pinging the alias resolves correctly.  I haven't gotten to the database restore yet, so that's not a concern.  I'm just trying to validate the connection first with the correct server and instance names.

In all cases I'm using Windows Authentication.

SQL 2012 upgrade question

Hi All,

We are in process of upgrading to 2012 from 2008 R2, however my development team also wants to keep 2008R2 version of some databases to support small production releases to be release to 2008R2 prod server.

I've two options:

1. keep separate server for 2008R2 (which has additional cost).

2. move these databases to new SQL 2012 edition and set compatibility mode to 2008R2. and development team can migrate code from these databases to 2008R2 prod.

My question is , is there any caveat in going with option 2.

upgrade from SQL 2008R2 to SQL 2012

hi All,

I'm getting following advisory in database upgrade adviser report. does it mean it is going to convert datetime to smalldatetime in view definition?

The distributed partition views (DPVs) that are listed in the report contain potential remote references to smalldatetime columns. Under compatibility level 110, remote smalldatetime columns are now returned to local servers as smalldatetime columns instead of as datetime columns.  This behavior change may make the DPV unable to accept updates. You may need to modify the data type on the remote column to datetime to adjust for this change.

Database File_Fuid Shows NULL

Hello,

One of our recently migrated user databases in SQL2k12 server is showing up as NULL for .mdf when I run the following query:

select * from sys.database_files

NOTE: The file_id is 1.

The .ldf file has correct file_guid (file_id is 2). How can I fix the NULL value?

BTW, the database seems to be working fine otherwise.

Your immediate response will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Integrate windows search with linked server

Hello,

I need to migrate an application based on SQL server 2005 using a linked server to query the indexing service.

On the new server (win 2012 + SQL 2012), I have created a new linked server (OLE DB provider for Search). When I execute the query "SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(LS3, 'select top 10 * from SystemIndex')" to test, I'm receiving an error :

OLE DB provider "Search.CollatorDSO" for linked server "LS3" returned message "One or more errors occurred during processing of command.".
Msg 7321, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
An error occurred while preparing the query "select top 10 * from SystemIndex" for execution against OLE DB provider "Search.CollatorDSO" for linked server "LS3".

Any idea ?

Thx for your help

Denis

I'm new to MS Sql Sever Management Studio and need some help pulling data from a table in Server A and creating the same table on Server B.

From what I've read you can't export/import or use a wizard as the db is of the type dbo.md_*****.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

converting old sql outer join syntax =*/*=

$

I'm a Power Builder (PB) developer. I've migrated PB from 10 .5 to 12.5, and now I need to migrate the stored procedures from SQL Server 2005 to 2012 as well.

I get a invalid expression error when I run the procedures in Power Builder. We have previously been using a lower database compatibility model in 2005, which allowed the procedures to work there. I have learned that =* is the old way to write right outer joins.

                            For example:
                            select  *
                            from    A
                            right outer join
                                    B
                            on      A.bid = B.id

...is written in the old style like:
                            select  *
                            from    A,
                                    B
                            where   A.bid =* B.id

Here is a part of my procedure that uses *=:
                            SELECT  DISTINCT
                               a_stmt.cyc_dte,
                               a_carr.carr_nm,
                               a_stmt.amt_du_ic
                             FROM  a_stmt,
                               s_dataccs,
                               a_carr,
                               a_icc
                             WHERE ( a_stmt.ic_cntct_id *= a_icc.ic_cntct_id ) and -- HERE
                               ( a_icc.usg_ind = 'S' ) and
                               ( a_carr.acna = a_stmt.acna ) and
                               ( s_dataccs.acna = a_stmt.acna ) and ( s_dataccs.user_id = @user_id ) and
                               ( ( a_stmt.acna = @acna ) or ( @acna = '' ) ) AND
                               ( ( a_stmt.juris_id = @juris_id ) or ( @juris_id = '' ) ) AND
                               ( a_stmt.jrnl_mo_yr = @jrnl_mo_yr ) AND
                               ( a_stmt.amt_du_ic < 0 )

                            I have converted that to:
                            SELECT  DISTINCT
                               a_stmt.cyc_dte,
                               a_carr.carr_nm,
                               a_stmt.amt_du_ic
                            from
a_stmt left outer join a_icc on a_stmt.ic_cntct_id = a_icc.ic_cntct_id
                             join  a_carr on a_stmt.acna = a_carr.acna join s_dataccs on a_stmt.acna = s_dataccs.acna and

                               ( a_icc.usg_ind = 'S' ) and
                               ( s_dataccs.user_id = @user_id ) and
                               ( ( a_stmt.acna = @acna ) or ( @acna = '' ) ) AND
                               ( ( a_stmt.juris_id = @juris_id ) or ( @juris_id = '' ) ) AND
                               ( a_stmt.jrnl_mo_yr = @jrnl_mo_yr ) AND
                               ( a_stmt.amt_du_ic < 0 )

                            Here is one more :
                            SELECT r_rj.juris_id, "GRAND TOTAL", "",
                            round( isnull (sum(a_ovrudr.bd_intl + a_ovrudr.bd_inter + a_ovrudr.bd_intra+

                            GROUP BY   a_ovrudr.acna,  r_rj.juris_id, r_rj.ord
                            ORDER BY  yr, mo, r_rj.ord

which I have converted as :
                            SELECT r_rj.juris_id, "GRAND TOTAL", "",
                            round( isnull (sum(a_ovrudr.bd_intl + a_ovrudr.bd_inter + a_ovrudr.bd_intra+
                            a_ovrudr.bd_fed_tx + a_ovrudr.bd_st_lcl_tx), 0), 2),
                            r_rj.ord
FROM a_ovrudr right outer join r_rj on a_ovrudr.juris_id = r_rj.juris_id and
                            ( a_ovrudr.acna = @acna  ) AND
                            (( SUBSTRING (a_ovrudr.jrnl_mo_yr, 3,4) = @yr_1 ) OR
                            ( SUBSTRING (a_ovrudr.jrnl_mo_yr, 3,4) = @yr_2 )  OR
                            ( SUBSTRING (a_ovrudr.jrnl_mo_yr, 3,4) = @yr_3 ) OR
                            ( SUBSTRING (a_ovrudr.jrnl_mo_yr, 3,4) = @yr_4 ) OR
                            ( SUBSTRING (a_ovrudr.jrnl_mo_yr, 3,4) = @yr_5 ) )
                            GROUP BY   a_ovrudr.acna,  r_rj.juris_id, r_rj.ord
                            ORDER BY  yr, mo, r_rj.ord

Is my approach correct, or do I need to add a WHERE condition to it? I don't have access to the production database to check. The development database is in SQL Server 2012 too, sO I will not be able to run the old version there to check. It would be really kind, if someone could help me out with this!  Thanks!

What are down side migrating Windows 2003 SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Ent Edition to Win 2008 SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Data Centre Edition?

Hi,

What can go wrong or how can I migrate SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Ent Edition Production server to SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Data Centre edition.

We are currently moving from server to server (Win 2003 to Win 2008 R2 x64).  Since this case, we are planning to migrate SQL Server 2008 R2 Sp2 ENT edition databases/security/procedures/ETL etc to SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Data Centre edition.  We want to know what can go wrong or which area we may find issues?  What is the easiest way to migrate?  Anything we need to watch out?

We are also trying to work with our software licensing team to obtain the ENT Edition key.  If we find it in time, we may go straight from ENT to ENT edition.  Worse case, ENT to Data Centre edition.  So, preparing ourself for the migration. Please advise what can be the down side going ENT to Data Centre edition...  Thanks.
